Arrived on the morning boat from Gamboa yesterday morning, after a long day’s travel from Oklahoma which included an unscheduled landing in Cartagena, Colombia (my seat mate looked at the in-flight magazine and said thoughtfully, “American doesn’t actually fly to Colombia”). A little refueling and late-night takeoff from their only, disconcertingly short, runway (Pilot: “We’re going to taxi to the end and do a 180.”) In a nutshell: a Copa Airliner had skidded off the wet Panama City runway just ahead of us. No one hurt. Panama City Tocumen Airport closed and our flight diverted while they looked for a big tow truck.
Barro Colorado used to be a hill top and was turned into an island by a man, a plan, a canal. Panama.
Anyway, it’s fine here and full of birds and old friends and howler monkeys and rich, ripe, rotting smells and heat and rain. Enjoying it very much. More to come.
Red legged honey creeper and this morning’s pink dawn over the Panama Canal. That little chunk of trees in the water is called Slothia Island, peopled by greater anis, crocodiles and whatever else that swims, flies or boats over there from BCI. Probably a research biologist piloting that little launch, carving that crescent wake in the water.
