A Yellow-rumped warbler landed in the golden raintree just outside my studio and turned its back on me yesterday. And just so I didn’t miss the point, it drooped its wings down its sides and let that bright patch outshine a whole tree full of yellow leaves. I’m not sure I’ve noticed other warblers holding their wings other than neatly folded up over the back, but in the avian world of visual cues this was a clear and deliberate signal I am.
