Ms. Magazine founder and icon of feminist activism, Gloria Steinem, will be the keynote speaker at the Choices 2013 fundraising dinner and art auction on September 21 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The event will benefit Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma. I’m honored to have been selected to paint her portrait. And I’m looking forward to the evening (Crossing my fingers that lots of money gets raised between the salad and the dessert).
In other news, I’m working up new paintings for a solo show next April at the Myriad Botanical Gardens (a fabulous tropical conservatory under glass in OKC). Above is a current piece based on sketches from Panama. Do you ever crave turquoise or a shot of mango? After too many years of near-monochrome, I think I might be rounding the corner into a hot color phase.
Given that these new works will be of an iconic tropical nature, look for jaguars and toucans, maybe a harpy eagle, but also agoutis and antbirds and lesser-known rainforest residents. Friday Figures goes on hiatus for a while, but after April 2014 we’ll return to our regular menu of nude humans. So please explore with me this bit of diversity, bio or otherwise. It’s time for some jungle love.
